How to compress images without losing too much quality
A practical guide to reducing image size while keeping previews clean and usable.
Start with the image purpose
A blog image, thumbnail, profile icon, and social card do not need the same dimensions. Decide where the image will appear before choosing compression settings.
For web use, resizing a very large image before compression often saves more space than lowering quality too aggressively.
Use moderate quality first
Start around a balanced quality setting, preview the result, and compare the file size. If the image still looks clean, lower quality gradually.
Images with text, UI screenshots, or sharp edges may need higher quality than simple photos.
Check the final preview
Always open the compressed image before publishing. Look for blurry text, blocky gradients, or color banding.
If the image is for social platforms, preview the crop ratio after compression so important content is not cut off.
